As most of you know we specialize in weddings. We have since we started over TEN YEARS AGO ( I can’t even believe its been that long- it feels like yesterday ) We have always photographed newborn sessions for our past brides (and give them a past bride HBP discount) because we always love seeing them again and catching up on their lives since their wedding. They trusted us with their wedding day and so trusting us with their next big life event is only natural! We have really grown to love shooting newborns and every year we shoot more and more. We do not advertise for them at all and still do not want to specialize in them but would like to start offering them to new clients and not just our past brides!
We have two session options to choose from: Lifestyle and Studio/Outdoor. We always let out clients choose which type of session they prefer between a lifestyle OR studio/outdoor newborn session. Every client is different and we love giving them the option of the look they love the most! After you decide which type of session you prefer we set it up within the first two weeks of your due date. If we need to change the date once we know when baby comes into the world we totally can. I wanted to talk a little bit about each session and the pros and cons of each one.
Lifestyle Newborn Session: This session is done in your own home and is more of you guys “just being” with baby. We typically shoot most of the images in your bedroom or the baby’s nursery. We HAVE to HAVE great natural light for these sessions so keep that in mind. If your home is dark, this session is not for you. We will always photograph baby alone at lifestyle sessions but we start with mom and dad (and siblings if you have them) just holding baby, cuddling baby, loving on them just like you do in real life. This session is just like us being a fly on the wall with some direction from us but is mostly less styled. We also like to shoot a few photos of your nursery for you to keep for your personal use. Since we are there anyway it is a little gift to be able to have these for your baby book or records!
Studio and Outdoor Newborn Session: Over the years we have completely remodeled our studio space to include an entire room that is devoted to shooting newborns. We have a white shiplap wall, a dark wooden background, solid color beanbag backdrops, and various print/solid backgrounds as well. We have an extensive selection of wraps, backgrounds, props, outfits and headbands for you to choose from. You do not have to bring a thing! Depending on the season your baby arrives doing a few outdoor photos are a great addition to our studio newborns. We love doing them outdoors and the sounds of being outside normally lull baby into a deep sleep. Normally we have you arrive at our studio and choose a few props and then we head outside to an outdoor location that we love that has big pretty trees and natural surroundings. You can do family photos with this session too! Each session is different and we love them both equally!
Typically, before we begin, we ask what colors your nursery is in and try and use wraps and outfits that coordinate well with your home. We try and do between 3-5 different set ups (depending on how well baby sleeps) with a different prop, backdrop, outfit, and/or wrap so you have plenty of variety in your photos. If you choose to do any family photos that is one of the sets, we always like to do a solid white setup to get great close up photos of all of their tiny toes and body parts (we call these our “Studio Whites” ) and the other three setups are either up to you to choose from our selection or we can choose if you prefer!
Sessions can last anywhere from 1-3 hours and all depend on how well baby sleeps and if we need to put them back to sleep in between set ups or if they stay asleep the entire time. We have a couch and tv with netflix for parents to relax and take a nap if you want! We are pretty good at getting babies to sleep and after photographing hundreds and hundreds of babies the last ten years we know exactly what they need, what to do, and how to get them to relax.
