When we were in Belize I spent one day of the trip just taking random peoples photos. I have realized that I do not do much photography as a hobby anymore and have been meaning to really make myself shoot for fun like I did in the past. So I just started asking people if I could take their picture. Not a single one of them were caught off guard by this or said no, which I thought was interesting…. and it was so fun for me. I think my family and brother and sister in law thought I was crazy for this until they started to see how some of these people just lit up when they got their picture taken. Doing this really made me think about how we interact with strangers and sometimes just stopping people in the street and chatting with them was the highlight of their day (my day even)
When I would ask someone to take their picture, they would normally ask why, and I would tell them because I thought they were beautiful. They would then blush, and say yes, and then they would just open up and talk to me. It was so neat. The island has such a different way of life that I was so glad our children got to see how other children and people live, and work, and play. It was SO different from our own way of life. This was one (of many) of my favorite parts of our trip. I love people and I love their stories and breaking down walls just to listen to them was so neat.
This woman was my favorite… i asked her if I could take her picture, and she just smiled a little the first time, and then I showed it to her on the back of my camera and she said, “wait, wait” and fixed her hair a bit and got the things she was selling. She was so proud of her work and she wanted to include it in the picture. There is such a difference in the first image of her and the last. She looks truly happy in the last image like she feels beautiful.
i love this image with my whole heart. I am persuading my husband to let me print it huge for our bedroom because it just makes me smile to think of her.

this man made cool things out of wood on the side of his home- he was really friendly and I wanted to buy something from him just because this was his livelihood, but he told me that he didnt have anything that was completely finished. I thought that was interesting too because he wasnt just “selling to make money” even though Im sure he needed it, he actually thought of his work as art.
this man charges you to hold his “pet” racoon (but he didnt charge me for this picture) these precious little girls were just playing in the street. I wanted to take them home with me.
this girl told me she had never had anyone take a picture of her before. This made me really sad so I took lots of her :)
this man moved to the island to start a free music school for children, after I took his picture he gave me his gmail address and asked if I would email it to him. This caught me off guard and made me laugh- but I sent it to him! He told us that his school was going to have the first ever music play in a few weeks and he was really proud.
these adorable kiddos followed their mom around all day while she sold jewelry and trinkets on the beach. The mom said she adopted the youngest child because someone had left her on their porch.

these little boys were sitting in our golf court when we got back from eating dinner at a local place
so i made them take a picture with me…and we had fun doing it this man owned a roadside bar that made the best drinks in towns- we can attest because we spent some time with him… :) He said he moved to the island after Hurricane Katrina and his family still all lives in the states We were all so surprised at how many children just wandered the island night and day. Children were never with their parents they were almost always alone or with other children all by themselves. We also thought it was fascinating that they were never being entertained. The majority of children in the states have wiis, car dvd players, ipods, cell phones and such- SO many things to entertain them 100% the time. They were often kicking a coke bottle or playing chase in the streets. One woman told me she couldnt afford to take her children to school because it was $5 per month. It was heartbreaking to see such poverty in some places. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and we loved the people very much.
